Great Expectations

Pip (Michael York) is a blacksmith's apprentice who one night runs afoul of escaped prisoner Magwitch (James Mason). Pip helps him, but Magwitch is nevertheless caught. Not long after, Pip's neighbor, Miss Havisham (Margaret Leighton), invites him over to meet her daughter, Estella (Sarah Miles). Pip develops a strong attraction, but Estella merely regards him as a plaything. It's not until Pip inherits a fortune from an anonymous patron that he's able to rise socially and pursue her in earnest.
